How to switch SEO or digital agencies in Perth without losing rankings
Switching SEO agencies in Perth is common and, done properly, does not cost you rankings. The risk sits in what you lose during the handover (account access, content, links and tracking), not in the change of supplier itself. Long-term lock-in contracts are still common here but they are not necessary: PWD does not use 12 or 24 month terms, so clients stay on results. This guide covers the contract questions, the access audit, the handover checklist and the first 90 days with a new agency.
Are long-term SEO contracts common in Perth?
Yes. Twelve and 24 month terms are still standard at many Perth agencies, and some renew automatically for another full term. They exist for the agency’s cash flow and sales targets, not because SEO needs two years to show whether it is working. SEO does need time, and a minimum period long enough to do the work is fair. A term that outlasts the evidence is not.
A fair SEO agreement has a defined initial term long enough to complete the audit, fix the site and start building content and links (months, not years), then runs month to month with a notice period. Before you sign any SEO agreement, check five things:
- Term. How long is the initial commitment, and what happens at the end of it: does it roll month to month, or renew for another full term?
- Notice. How many days’ written notice does cancellation need, and who must it be sent to?
- Exit fee. What does leaving early cost, and is there any termination right if the agency fails to deliver?
- Ownership of work. Who owns the content, the site, the links, the accounts and the data when you leave?
- Reporting cadence. How often you get reports, what they contain, and whether the numbers come from accounts you can log into yourself.
Should Perth agencies lock clients into contracts?
No. A minimum period to do the work is reasonable. A lock-in that survives non-performance is not. The test is simple: if the agency stopped producing results in month four, could you leave without paying for months you will never receive value from? If the answer is no, the contract protects the agency from its own performance.
PWD’s position is that an agency should earn the renewal every month. Our standard SEO term and exit conditions are stated in plain words under PWD’s SEO terms below and on our terms and conditions page, and they are far shorter than the 12 and 24 month lock-ins common in Perth. Clients stay because the reports show the work and the results, not because a clause says they must.
Are performance-based SEO models common in Perth?
Performance-based SEO is rare in Perth, and where it exists it is usually structured so the agency wins either way. Two models come up.
Pay on ranking. You pay when a keyword reaches page one or the top three. The agency chooses the keywords, so it chooses terms it can move: long-tail phrases, your own brand name, terms with no commercial value. You pay for positions, not customers.
Pay per lead. You pay for each enquiry. This can work in Google Ads arrangements where the agency controls the spend, but in SEO it pushes the agency towards volume over quality and towards tactics that produce leads fast and rankings that do not last.
Rankings are the wrong unit for any of this. A position is not a customer, it moves daily, and it can be gamed. Realistic guarantees from a Perth SEO agency are about process and conduct, never positions: a documented plan, reporting on a fixed schedule, access to your own accounts, named people, response times and a clear exit. Read why SEO guarantees are a warning sign before you sign anything that promises a position.
Is it common to switch digital agencies in Perth?
Yes. Switching is common, and the triggers are consistent. Most Perth businesses that change agency do so for one of five reasons:
- No measurable movement after six months. Rankings, organic traffic and enquiries have not moved in a direction you can see in your own analytics.
- Reporting you cannot verify. PDF reports with no access to the underlying Google Analytics or Search Console data, ranking reports for terms nobody searches, or vague updates such as “optimisation in progress”.
- No named people. You do not know who does the work, where they are, or who to call. A sales contact who disappears after signing, and a different voice every month.
- Harmful tactics. Keyword stuffing, thousands of low-quality links, thin or duplicated pages, or a site migration that lost traffic. These agencies cost you more than their fee.
- Refusing account access. The agency holds your Google Ads, Analytics, Business Profile or domain and will not add you as an owner. This is the clearest sign of all.
Cheap agencies produce most of these. Quality SEO takes people and hours, and an agency charging a fraction of the market rate is cutting them somewhere: automated tools, template strategies, junior or offshore teams, or too many accounts per person.
How long should I give a Perth SEO agency before switching?
Give a Perth SEO agency six months with visible work and some movement, twelve months in a competitive category, and less if the warning signs above are already present. The yardstick has not changed: you should see some movement in keyword rankings within three to four months, with more significant traffic increases by month six to eight. Competitive industries can take twelve months or more for major improvements.
“Visible work” is the key phrase. In the first three months the site should have been audited, technical problems fixed, content published and links earned, and each of those should appear in a report you can check. If the work is visible and the movement is early but real, stay. If six months have passed with neither, the timeline is not the problem.
How do I switch digital agencies in Perth safely?
Audit your access before you give notice, then hand over in a fixed order. Most of the damage in an agency switch happens because a business gives notice first and discovers afterwards that it never owned its own accounts.
The access audit
For every item below, the answer to “who should own this” is you. The agency should have access, ideally through its own manager or partner account, and you should be able to remove that access on the day you choose. Check each one before notice goes in.
- Google Analytics 4. You should be an Administrator on both the property and the account. In GA4, open Admin, then Account access management and Property access management, and check your role. A property created inside the agency’s own account has to be moved to yours or you need full ownership of it.
- Google Search Console. You should be a verified Owner, not a delegated User. Open Settings, then Users and permissions, and check. Owners can add and remove everyone else.
- Google Ads. The account should be in your name, with the agency linked through its manager account. Where an agency runs your campaigns inside its own account, get in writing what transfers when you leave: conversion history, audiences and any prepaid ad credit. Ask for the monthly statement from Google showing spend.
- Google Tag Manager. You should be an Administrator on the container and the account. Tag Manager holds your conversion tracking, and losing it means losing the data your next agency needs.
- Domain registrar and DNS. The domain should be registered to your business, with your details as the registrant contact. Check the registry record and the registrar login. A domain registered by an agency is the hardest thing on this list to recover.
- Hosting and CMS admin. Know where the site is hosted, who holds the account, and whether you have an administrator login to the CMS. Ask what a full backup or migration export costs and how long it takes, because many hosts and agencies charge for it.
- Google Business Profile. You should be the Primary owner. Check under the profile’s people and access settings. An agency can be a Manager without owning the profile.
- Meta Business Manager and pixel. Your business should own the Business Manager, the ad account and the pixel, with the agency added as a partner.
- Email sending domains and forms. Know which domain and service send your enquiry notifications, and where form submissions go.
- Call tracking numbers. Tracking numbers are often the property of the provider or the agency. Find out whether the number transfers or is retired when you leave, and stop publishing agency-owned numbers on your website and Business Profile before then.
- Rank tracking and link tools. These usually stay with the agency. Ask for an export of ranking history and the link list instead.
To have this done for you, request a free account and access audit from PWD. We check GA4, Search Console, Google Ads, Google Business Profile, domain and hosting ownership, and give you a written handover list to hand to your current agency. The handover checklist
Request the following in writing, with a date, as part of your notice. A professional agency will provide all of it.
- Content and design files: page copy, blog posts, images, logos, brand files and any design source files.
- Keyword research, content plans and the site structure the strategy was built on.
- The full backlink list with sources, dates and whether any were paid or sponsored.
- Redirect maps from any migration or site rebuild.
- Tracking documentation: which conversions are tracked, how, and where the tags live.
- Open invoices, licence renewals and any subscriptions (plugins, themes, tools) paid on your behalf.
- A written summary of the work done: what was changed, when, and what was in progress.
Giving notice
Read the term and notice clause before you write anything. Give notice in writing to the address the agreement names, state the date it takes effect, and list the handover items with a deadline that falls before the last invoice. Keep the old agency’s access live until the handover is complete, then remove it. Do not let an agency keep administrator access to anything after its last invoice is paid.
What’s the safest way to leave a Perth digital agency?
Leave with everything you own in your own accounts and nothing running under the agency’s. That comes down to four things.
Intellectual property. Content, design and code produced for you should be yours once you have paid for them. Check the IP clause in your agreement. If it is silent, get written confirmation before you leave.
Paid links. Sponsored placements and paid links stop when the agency stops paying for them. Ask which links in the backlink list were paid and expect those to drop. Losing them is better than continuing to pay for them.
Ads accounts owned by the agency. If the campaigns run inside the agency’s account, you lose the history when you leave. Ask for an export of campaign structure, search terms and conversion data, and set up your own account before the switch so the new agency can rebuild from it.
When access is refused. Each Google platform has a recovery path. Google Ads support has a process for the advertised business to recover an account it cannot access, with proof of ownership and billing. In GA4 any existing Administrator can add you, and where none remains Google has a request process for the site owner. For Google Business Profile you can request ownership from inside the profile, and Google gives the current owner a fixed window to respond before you can claim it. Start these early, because they take days, not hours.
The first 90 days with a new Perth agency
Expect an audit, a baseline and a plan before any new work. A new agency that starts changing things in week one, without knowing what the last one did, is repeating the problem.
Days 1 to 30. Access confirmed in your accounts, a technical audit of the site, a check that conversion tracking records every enquiry, and a baseline report showing rankings, organic traffic and enquiries as they stand. Nothing gets rebuilt yet.
Days 31 to 60. Fix what the audit found: broken pages, slow templates, missing redirects, tracking gaps. Agree the content and link plan against the baseline, and receive the first monthly report that measures against it.
Days 61 to 90. The plan is in flight: content publishing, links being earned, Business Profile work done. Early movement on quick wins should be visible, and this is when you and the agency decide what to keep from the old strategy and what to retire.
That is also how you reset a digital strategy with a new agency. Keep the pages, links and rankings that are working, fix what is broken, and rebuild the plan from the baseline rather than from a blank page.
How do Perth businesses recover from bad SEO agencies?
A new agency can fix most of the damage a bad one leaves behind, and recovery time depends on the cause. The first step is the same audit as above, with one extra question: what did the previous agency do that is still hurting the site?
Can a new Perth agency fix SEO damage?
Yes, in almost every case. What each type of damage takes:
- Toxic links. Identify them, request removal where possible, disavow the rest, and rebuild with links that earn their place. Recovery follows Google’s next reassessment of the site.
- Thin or duplicated content. Consolidate, rewrite or remove, with redirects where pages are merged. Rankings recover as the improved pages are recrawled.
- Botched migrations. Rebuild the redirect map from the old URLs, restore lost pages and fix internal links. This is often the fastest recovery, because the authority is still there.
- Manual actions. Fix the cause, document the fix, and submit a reconsideration request. Google reviews these on its own timetable.
How long does it take to recover SEO after switching agencies?
Weeks for migration fixes, months for content and link problems, and longer for manual actions. There is no honest fixed number, and any agency that gives you one is guessing. One more point: some of the rankings you lost were never real. Positions for vanity terms nobody searched, or terms with no commercial intent, do not need recovering. Measure recovery in organic enquiries, not against the old ranking report.
Does ISO certification matter for digital marketing agencies?
ISO certification matters for process and data handling, not for rankings. Two standards apply to an agency.
ISO 9001 is about quality management: documented processes, regular reviews and continual improvement. For a client it means the work follows a defined process rather than whoever is available that week.
ISO 27001 is about information security. Consider what the access audit above asks you to hand to an agency: logins to your analytics, ads, Business Profile, domain, hosting and CMS. ISO 27001 sets out how an organisation controls, transfers and protects that information, who can access it and how access is removed. An agency that holds your credentials without a documented security standard is a risk you carry.
Certification is verifiable. PWD’s ISO 9001 and ISO 27001 certification is issued through an accredited certifier, and you can ask any agency for its certificate number and check the register. Certification does not make an agency better at SEO. It does tell you how it handles your data and your work.
How do I avoid bad SEO agencies in Perth?
Run the proof checklist before you sign. Five signs rule an agency out on their own:
- Guaranteed rankings or a fixed number of leads.
- A 12 or 24 month lock-in with no exit for non-performance.
- Accounts it will not put in your name.
- No named team, or a team you cannot meet.
- A price that is a fraction of every other quote.
Then check what remains: certifications on the register, partner status in the official directory, a live client account on a screen share, and two current clients you can call. The agency proof checklist sets out the questions to ask.
If your current agency is not performing, switch to one that passes that checklist rather than to whoever calls next. Our SEO services in Perth page sets out what PWD does, who does it and how it is reported.
PWD’s SEO terms
PWD’s SEO terms are published on our terms and conditions page, and this is what they say. The standard term of an SEO contract is six months unless otherwise agreed in writing by PWD management. After the initial term the contract continues month to month unless cancelled with 30 days’ written notice. If a client terminates early, outside the instant termination clauses in the terms, a payment equal to 50% of the expected remaining contract revenue is due, with 30 days’ written notice. Campaigns can be suspended for one to two months, with the client accepting any ranking loss from the pause. Subject to full payment, the intellectual property in the work vests in the client. We make no guarantee that targeted keywords will move in a positive direction. There is no 12 or 24 month lock-in, we communicate weekly with detailed reports, and all work is done in-house from our West Leederville office.
What an SEO engagement with PWD includes:
- Keyword research and strategy
- Technical SEO
- Content creation and optimisation
- Link building
- Local SEO setup
- Performance monitoring and weekly reporting
Frequently asked questions
Are no-lock-in SEO agencies in Perth better?
They remove one risk, not all of them. A short term means you can leave an agency that is not performing without paying for months of nothing, which is worth having. It does not tell you whether the agency owns its work, reports honestly or does the work in-house. Run the same access, reporting and proof checks on a no-lock-in agency as on any other, then treat the short term as a bonus.
How do I switch conversion rate optimisation providers?
Use the same access audit, plus the test history. Confirm you own the analytics, Tag Manager and any testing platform account, then request every experiment run to date: hypothesis, variants, dates, sample sizes and results, including the tests that lost. A new CRO provider that starts without that history will re-run tests you have already paid for.
